JAILCON17 originally scheduled for August 28-30, has been POSTPONED due to Hurricane Harvey and Louisiana Governor’s declared State of Emergency.  New dates will be posted as soon as available.

The decision last Friday to postpone JAILCON17 South was not an easy one.  Based on the forecast from the National Weather Service, it seemed best to err on the side of caution and safety.  In the early part of the weekend, we questioned our decision.  Now, it seems more and more that the right decision was made.

A large percentage of our registrants are from the State of Louisiana and know all too well the potential devastating effects of a hurricane, especially in the low areas in and around New Orleans and throughout coastal Louisiana and neighboring Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.  It was only about three weeks ago that New Orleans experienced significant street and neighborhood flooding from heavy rainfall.  Friday’s forecast offered the possibility of that happening again, perhaps even worse than before.  The Governor of Louisiana declared a State of Emergency last week and New Orleans activated  emergency response procedures which remain in place this week.

As this week begins, it is evident that the postponement decision was the right one to make.  Harvey has now re-entered the Gulf of Mexico and is predicted to take an eastward turn which would have a great impact on southwest  and central Louisiana.  As  Harvey drifts further to the east, the impact on the New Orleans area could produce flooding there.  The eastern side of any hurricane always takes the hardest hit and Louisiana is being pounded now with heavy bands of rain and tornadoes. Additionally, the hurricane has significantly impacted transportation throughout the coastal area, with airports and highways being closed.

We are in the process of rescheduling JAILCON17 South and will notify you as soon as firm dates are set with the hotel.  Meanwhile, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact NIJO at  online@jailtraining.org or (801) 810-JAIL (5245).

Thank you for your patience and understanding and please join with the NIJO staff as we offer our prayers for the citizens of Texas and Louisiana.

Stay safe,
