Dannemora Officers Use Chemical Agents to Break Up 60-Inmate Brawl

A fight involving up to 60 inmates broke out at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora earlier this week.

According to a release by the union representing state correctional officers, the fight started Tuesday afternoon in the prison’s recreation yard with just four inmates. After it escalated, prison officers began firing chemical agents from the towers above.

According to the union, officers fired a total of 22 canisters of chemical agents into the yard before the fighting stopped.

Officers found two make-shift weapons in the yard and a third in the area where inmates were moved to after the fight. Several inmates were injured in the fight, with some transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
