RIKERS ISLAND, NY —
A Rikers Island inmate who put a fellow prisoner into a chokehold in the jail’s mental health unit will serve eight years behind bars for the deadly attack.
Artemio Rosa, 28, came up behind Casey Holloway, 35, who was sitting on a chair inside the Anna M. Kross Center on Rikers on July 9, 2018, and strangled him for about 30 seconds.
Video shows a correction officer pulling Rosa away, but Holloway, who had asthma, suffered an attack and collapsed moments later, authorities said.
Rosa pleaded guilty to strangulation last month. Bronx Supreme Court Justice Steven Hornstein handed down the eight-year term Wednesday.
Rosa, who’s listed as a member of the Trinitarios gang, was in jail facing charges of criminal mischief and assault. Holloway, who was awaiting prosecution on robbery charges, was an aspiring music producer who was homeless for years, his family said.
