BERGEN CO, NY —
The ICE jail in Bergen County is just sick.
The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office has extended the mumps quarantine at the troubled lockup through the end of the week, according to spokesman Derek Sands. Five cases of mumps have been confirmed at the jail that rents space to ICE for detained immigrants facing deportation in New York City.
County officials will assess whether the quarantine needs to be extended further on Friday, Sands said. Last week Sands told the Daily News the sheriff’s office was operating under the assumption the month-long quarantine would be lifted in days.
“Amid deteriorating conditions at Bergen County Jail, we are appalled to learn about the indefinite extension of the mumps quarantine. We continue to be extremely concerned for the health and safety of our clients,” the New York Family Immigrant Unity Project said in a statement. The group provides public defenders to immigrants facing deportation.
