Two Arrests After Gun, Drugs Seized at Prison

Two people were arrested Sunday morning after a loaded handgun and several types of drugs were seized at Washington Correctional Facility, according to State Police.

An 18-year-old man from Rutland, Vermont was charged with two felony weapons counts after a search of the parking lot at the medium-security prison yielded a loaded .380-caliber handgun, according to State Police.

Police said he was in a pickup truck parked in the Route 22 prison’s parking lot when search dogs that were checking vehicles for contraband alerted at the truck.

A search turned up marijuana as well as the gun, for which the man did not have a permit, officials said.

The teen, Ethan R. Renfrew, told police the gun was a relative’s, and that he did not know it was in the truck, according to police. He had not tried to enter the prison with the weapon.

He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm and misdemeanor criminal possession of marijuana, records show.
