Jail Inmate Accused of Attacking Corrections Officer

A New Castle man awaiting trial on drug-related charges now stands accused of attacking a guard at the Henry County jail.

Trace Alan Byers, 26, was charged last week with battery resulting in bodily injury to a public safety officer, a Level 5 felony carrying up to six years in prison.

According to court documents, officers at the jail were conducting a search of a cell block on Aug. 9 when Byers first refused to cooperate with a guard, and then attacked her.

The guard said she observed Byers handling an unknown object to another inmate before he “stepped in front of me, telling me to “get the —- out of here. … This is my house.”

During a struggle, the officer said, Byers “pushed his chest up against me” before punching her in the face and shoving her.

He later allegedly struck her face with his knee.

A trial date has not yet been set in that Henry Circuit Court 2 case.
