Tippecanoe County Inmate Passes Out, Dies Sitting at Dayroom Table

Forty-year-old Jahmal Rashan Moore sat at a table in a dayroom inside the Tippecanoe County Jail about 8:05 a.m. Tuesday when he fell unconscious, according to a news release from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Paramedics rushed Moore to Franciscan Health Hospital, but he was unresponsive when he arrived, Tippecanoe County Coroner Donna Avolt said.

It is likely that Moore died before he arrived at the hospital, but only a physician can pronounce that a person had died, and once paramedics begin treatment, they cannot stop without the directed by a physician, who may pronounce the person dead based on paramedics’ assessments, Avolt said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning, Avolt said.

Moore was serving a two-year sentence in the jail for convictions on two counts of possession of synthetic marijuana, according to court records.

He’d been at the jail since his sentencing hearing on July 26.

Indiana State Police are investigating Moore’s death, Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.

Moore was the father of Darius Printup, 21, who is awaiting trial on charges of dealing meth and other drug charges. Printup’s case was venued to Hamilton County earlier this summer.
