National Institute for Jail Operations Visits 100 Facilities Across Seven States During National Correctional Officers Week
May 10, 2026 — In honor of National Correctional Officers Week, the National Institute for Jail Operations (NIJO) completed a multi-state jail tour recognizing the dedication, professionalism, and service of correctional officers working in facilities across the country.
From May 3–9, NIJO staff traveled to 100 correctional facilities throughout Missouri, Georgia, New Mexico, Iowa, Alabama, Tennessee, and Minnesota to personally thank correctional officers and jail staff for their commitment to one of the most demanding professions in public safety.
During each visit, NIJO presented facilities with a framed commemorative print highlighting the origins of National Correctional Officers Week and featuring remarks from President Ronald Reagan, who established the observance in 1984 through Presidential Proclamation 5187. Staff members at each facility also received specially designed NIJO stickers as a small token of appreciation for their service.
National Correctional Officers Week was established to recognize the essential role correctional officers play in maintaining the safety, security, and daily operations of jails and correctional facilities across the United States. In his original proclamation, President Reagan noted that correctional officers serve in “demanding and often dangerous” roles and deserve “our utmost respect.” Â
While much of the work performed inside correctional facilities happens outside of public view, correctional officers remain a critical component of the criminal justice system. Officers are tasked with maintaining safety and order while balancing custodial, supervisory, and interpersonal responsibilities in highly challenging environments.
NIJO’s weeklong tour was designed to ensure correctional professionals know their work is recognized and appreciated.
“Correctional officers are often the unseen backbone of public safety,” said the organization. “National Correctional Officers Week provides an important opportunity to recognize the men and women who show up every day to serve their communities under incredibly difficult circumstances.”
In addition to honoring correctional professionals during the tour, NIJO also encourages agencies and individual officers to continue investing in professional development opportunities throughout the year through its training events and leadership programs.
NIJO hosts Regional JAILCON training events across the country focused on practical, experience-based training for jail professionals. More information about upcoming events can be found at JAILCON.
The organization also offers its ELITE Academy leadership program, designed to develop current and future leaders in corrections through intensive, hands-on training and mentorship opportunities. Information about ELITE Academy can be found at ELITE Academy.
