By engaging in this process, facilities show their dedication to operational consistency, legal compliance, and excellence in corrections.
ACCREDITATION PROCESS
The NIJO Accreditation Process is a comprehensive and rigorous journey towards achieving the prestigious designation of a “NIJO Accredited Facility.” This status is a testament to a facility’s adherence to sound policies, procedures, and consistent operational standards in corrections.
Here’s an overview of the accreditation steps:
INITIATING ACCREDITATION
Facilities interested in accreditation need to complete the NIJO Accreditation Form. One of our accreditation experts will get in touch with you and initiate your accreditation journey. Next, an Accreditation Contract Agreement is sent by NIJO, formalizing the intent and commitment to pursue accreditation.
ACCREDITATION MANAGER
Each facility designates an Accreditation Manager, who acts as the primary point of contact throughout the accreditation process.
CONTRACT EXECUTION & PAYMENT
The facility executes the Accreditation Contract Agreement and submits it with the required fees to NIJO and AARMS, thereby initiating the process.
ONLINE SYSTEM ACTIVATION
NIJO activates the facility’s access to the AARMS web-based accreditation audit module, allowing the facility to start the self-audit checklist and prepare for the NIJO Auditor Team’s inspection.
SELF-AUDIT & DOCUMENTATION
Facilities conduct a self-audit, compiling compliance documentation and policy proofs, which are then submitted to NIJO for review.
ONSITE INSPECTION & REVIEW
Upon completion of the self-audit, NIJO schedules and conducts an onsite accreditation inspection, followed by an exit conference to discuss findings.
FINAL ASSESSMENT & ACCREDITATION DECISION
Post-inspection, NIJO reviews the findings and decides on the accreditation status, which is formally communicated to the facility.
CORRECTIVE ACTIONS & APPEALS
Facilities below the minimum score have the chance to rectify non-compliant areas. Appeals against the findings can be submitted and reviewed by an appointed Accreditation Review Panel.
ACCREDITATION RECOGNITION & MAINTENANCE
Once accredited, facilities receive formal recognition and are required to submit annual documentation and undergo periodic inspections to maintain their status.
RE-ACCREDITATION
Every three years, facilities undergo re-accreditation, repeating the original process to ensure continued compliance and excellence.
